Blithedale: The Cushings' Place in Marin

By Laurie Thompson · March 01, 2019

We invite you to join us on Monday March 11th at 6:30 pm for a special presentation by Tim Wood, a great great grandson of John Cushing, as he tells the story of the Blithedale Hotel and with it the story of the Cushing family whose members played important roles in shaping Marin’s rich heritage.

The presentation will take place at the California Room's Map & Special Collections Annex at 1600 Los Gamos, Suite 182 in San Rafael.

In 1873, Dr. John Cushing, a physician from San Francisco who was “done to death” with his hectic medical practice,  moved with his family onto a homestead at the foot of Mount Tamalpais —in what is today Mill Valley— and founded Blithedale, a rural resort where he and guests could relax and restore health in a stunning outdoor setting.

Over the next four decades, Blithedale flourished.  It attracted fashionable summer guests from around the Bay Area and became one of the most popular resort hotels in Northern California.

We look forward to seeing you on the 11th!
